Relocating to Charlotte for Work? How to Plan Temporary Housing (and How Long You'll Need It)
Charlotte is one of the Southeast's busiest relocation markets, and the pattern for newcomers is remarkably consistent: a job offer, a start date, and a housing search that takes longer than the timeline allows. Temporary housing bridges that gap.
Why so many people land in temporary housing first
More than 60% of Mecklenburg County's in-migration comes from out of state, and a steady wave of corporate moves keeps adding to it. A June 2026 roundup lists Scout Motors, Maersk, EG Group, and PSA Airlines among the companies bringing jobs to Charlotte. Analysts also note that the metro has diversified into energy, manufacturing, and data centers, widening the range of people relocating here.
Very few of those newcomers can view a home in person, close on it, and move in by their start date.
How long will you need it?
Most stays run 60 to 90 days, though some stretch to a year or more. Common reasons:
Buying a home and waiting to close
A lease that starts weeks after your start date
Wanting to learn the city before you commit to a neighborhood
Waiting for family, school year, or a spouse's job to line up
Use your temporary home to test-drive neighborhoods
Renting a 12-month lease sight unseen is one of the more expensive mistakes newcomers make. Use your first 60 days to test rush-hour commutes on I-77 and I-85 and figure out what fits:
Uptown, South End, Plaza Midwood: walkable, near the banking and corporate core
Lake Norman (Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Mooresville): lake living, more space
SouthPark, Ballantyne, Matthews: established, suburban feel
Concord and Cabarrus County: often more house for the money, heavy new construction
Ask HR what's covered
Relocation packages vary widely. Whether a company covers housing in full or in part depends on its policy, the job situation, and the length of stay. Ask about the amount, the duration, and whether they can bill the housing provider directly.
Keep an eye on the 90-day mark
North Carolina exempts stays of 90 or more continuous days from sales and occupancy tax. If your timeline is close, mention it when you request housing. (This isn't tax advice. Confirm the details with a professional.)
A note for HR teams and relocation coordinators
If you're moving talent into the Carolinas, the best housing partner takes the work off your desk: one call, clear options, one invoice, and the flexibility to extend or adjust when start dates move. Ask any provider whether units are inspected, who's reachable after hours, and how fast they can confirm placement.
